As the track continued to dry out on the opening day of the Grand Prix of Turkey weekend the 250cc riders enjoyed their first free practice session at the Istanbul Park track this morning.

Most riders were able to complete a decent amount of laps with title holder and current World Championship leader Jorge Lorenzo leading the way yet again, lapping in 1'59.483, just 0.064 ahead Scot Racing Team's Andrea Dovizioso.

Due to a slippery surface in the first session of the day the 125cc participants were more than 10 seconds off record pace, whilst later the MotoGP riders were closing the gap to roughly five seconds off their circuit record times.

Lorenzo and Dovizioso's times were roughly 2.5 seconds slower than Alex de Angelis' circuit best lap set in qualifying for the 2005 Grand Prix, showing that the pace is picking up as the day progresses.

After winning the first two races of his title defence in Qatar and Jerez, Lorenzo is determined to continue that form in the Turkey this year - where he crashed during last season's race leading to a temporary dip in form.

Meanwhile, De Angelis was the fourth fastest this morning, 0.386 behind Master - Mapfre Aspar colleague Alvaro Bautista, who himself was 0.680 slower than Lorenzo.

The fifth quickest participant in the outing was Emmi - Caffe Latte Aprilia's Thomas Luthi meaning Dovizioso was the sole Honda rider in the top five on the timesheets, while Lorenzo's fierce Spanish rival Hector Barbera was way down the list in 14th.
