Corsi takes first ever Grand Prix win in Turkey

Skilled Racing Team's Simone Corsi took his first ever Grand Prix victory this afternoon in the third 125cc race of the 2007 season at Istanbul Park.

The 20 year-old former 250cc rider started third on the grid, took the hole shot from Mattia Pasini on the first corner and was in the lead for several periods during an exciting race which saw him ultimately claim the win by overtaking Joan Olive on the final lap.

Polaris World's Pasini started the race on pole followed by Hector Faubel, Corsi and Gabor Talmacsi – with Pasini holding onto the lead after the first lap.

Those front four did battle for first place in the opening stages, while the young American Red Bull KTM 125 rider Steve Bonsey crashed on the third lap but was unhurt and remounted to rejoin the contest.

But Pasini's unbelievably cruel luck continued when he dropped back from leading into 30th position with technical problems on the fourth lap, having had similar problems in the opening two races of the year. The Italian incredibly made it back up to 17th only to retire on the final lap.

Corsi then took the lead, while KTM rider Tomoyoshi Koyama joined the front group, fighting for a podium position which he was to eventually secure.

With Raffaele de Rosa and Lukas Pesek also in the mix a group of seven riders were competing for podium places in the middle stages in a superb display of 125cc racing and on lap eight Pasini's Polaris World team-mate Olive blasted through the pack to push up from sixth to second in one fantastic overtaking manoeuvre.

Olive held the lead with four laps to go, while 16 year-old Brit Bradley Smith briefly joined the big boys when Faubel was pushed by de Rosa wide and things got even tighter in the fight for podium places. Smith was clearly relishing the challenge but was to cross the line eighth after the more experienced riders around him imposed their authority.

With two laps to go Olive and Corsi pulled away by a couple of seconds, Corsi taking the lead again on the final lap to take victory by 0.098s, with Koyama third, De Rosa fourth and World Championship leader Talmacsi fifth.
