The Grand Prix of Turkey saw a new face on the top step of the podium when the Skilled Racing Team rider Simone Corsi crossed the finishing line 0.098s ahead of Polaris World rival Joan Olive at the end of an exciting 125cc race.

Having qualified third on the starting grid the 20 year-old Italian took full advantage of the unbelievably cruel luck and technical problems of compatriot and pole man Mattia Pasini, to make only the second podium appearance of his career.

Corsi's only other visit to the podium was back in his Kopron Team Scot days when he finished third behind fellow Italians Andrea Dovizioso and Fabrizio Lai at the 2004 Grand Prix of Japan.

Relatively experienced as a 125cc rider and with plenty of young blood around him this year following the graduation of several 2006 single cylinder competitors to the 250 class for the current campaign, Corsi has a good chance of regularly mounting the podium this season.

He started the year steadily with a fifth place finish in Qatar, but suffered a setback in Jerez when he crashed out on just the second lap of the race.

The events at Istanbul Park have opened up the 125cc World Championship pegging back Gabor Talmacsi, Hector Faubel and Lukas Pesek after they hogged the podium in the opening two races. The trio were knocked off the head of the timesheets in Turkey by Corsi, Olive and Tomoyoshi Koyama.

The experienced Talmacsi still leads way in the World Championship standings and may be 20 points ahead of Corsi, but having proved to himself that he can beat the best Corsi will be looking to close that gap when the Grand Prix of China takes place on 6th May.

Corsi made his first appearance in Grand Prix racing as a wild card at Mugello in 2002, has had three full seasons in 125 and spent a year in the 250cc category with MS Aprilia Italia Corse in 2005, which saw him finish 14th.

His 12th place finish in the 2006 final standings on his return to 125 competition was below expectations, but perhaps 2007 will finally be the year 20 year-old from Rome can live up to the nickname ‘Terminator' given to him by his friends.
