At a venue where he won last year's race in the quarter litre class from pole position, Hector Barbera headed the timesheets this morning in the 250cc first free practice session in Shanghai.

Team Toth Aprilia's Barbera has not quite had the start to 2007 which he would have hoped for and currently sits fifth in the general classification, already 46 points behind World Champion and arch rival Jorge Lorenzo who of course leads the championship after three races.

Lorenzo was prevented from making it three victories in a row in Turkey by Andrea Dovizioso and Barbera would like nothing more than to repeat his 2006 Chinese triumph and keep the 250cc title holder off the top step of the podium once again this weekend.

Barbera made a good start in the opening 250 practice session of the Sinopec Great Wall Lubricants Grand Prix of China today by recording the fastest lap of 2'06.586, which was 0.805s off his own circuit best lap set last year.

Fortuna Aprilia's Lorenzo was just 0.054s behind Barbera this morning, while the third fastest rider was Dovizioso, who has finished second in China on his two previous Grand Prix visits and was 0.623s off the pace in this session.

Repsol Honda's Julian Simon and Master – Mapfre Aspar's Alex de Angelis completed the top five.

The 250cc category competitors will re-appear at 3.05pm local time for their first qualifying session.
