Although he took pole position for tomorrow's Sinopec Great Wall Lubricants Grand Prix of China by smashing the previous record in Shanghai, Valentino Rossi does not consider himself the favourite for victory. The Fiat Yamaha rider explained in the post-session press conference that "Casey Stoner, and probably John Hopkins as well, all seem to be going very fast." Rossi also made light of a the subject of what he would need to beat Stoner in Shanghai, having stated after their battle in Qatar that he required 0.6 of a second of advantage on the straights. "This time I need a gun," was his rapid response. "When I look at the top speeds, I cry a little; tomorrow will be a hard battle."

"The pole lap was very exciting," he continued. "I was able to push to the limit without committing a single error. When I saw the time I was very impressed, and the Michelin qualifying tyres meant that we were flying. I only have one more mechanic to give a pole position watch too now!"
