Cheerful Guintoli gets confidence boost before Le Mans

The Dunlop Yamaha Tech 3 Team enjoyed their best result of the year to date at the Sinopec Great Wall Lubricants Grand Prix of China, as Sylvain Guintoli finished 13th in Shanghai.

Things could have been even better for the team if it was not for the fact that Guintoli's team-mate Makoto Tamada was involved in an accident with Konica Minolta's Shinya Nakano in the fourth lap - forcing the retirement of both Japanese riders.

Among the positives that the team will take forward to the next race is the fact that Guintoli was able to stay with defending world champion, Nicky Hayden, for several laps – helping to build the young Frenchman's confidence before his home Grand Prix at Le Mans in less than two weeks time.

A cheerful Guintoli, 2007's only MotoGP rookie, commented after the race: "I'm very happy with the race and the weekend. It was a good boost for me to be so close to Nicky for so long after he was caught up in that first lap incident and I had a lot of fun racing with him. Unfortunately I made a little mistake towards the end of the race that allowed the gap to open up."

"At the end of the day it is my best result in MotoGP, I was able to follow Rossi for a couple of laps during practice learning a few things and I managed to stay with the World Champion for half the race so this has given me a good boost of confidence for my home Grand Prix in Le Mans in two weeks time."

"I had a difficult start because I started at the back and I had to go round all the riders and the bikes. A good first lap then, before Nicky overtook me and I managed to follow him for quite a few laps, so it was good for me to learn, I must have spent about 8 or 10 laps behind him so it was pretty good fun."
