Rossi ekes out BMW M Award advantage

Although it is a little early in the season for Valentino Rossi to be making space in the garage just yet, the Fiat Yamaha rider already has a firm advantage as the MotoGP riders look to win a brand new BMW M.

The BMW M Award competition accumulates qualifying times over the course of the season and includes the MotoGP Official Test held at Jerez. Rossi already holds a 1'7 second advantage over nearest rival Dani Pedrosa, courtesy of his pole positions at Qatar, Turkey and Shanghai and victory at the timed shootout during preseason. The Italian's only blip this year has been at the race itself in Jerez, where he nonetheless started from second.

Pedrosa has been on the front row on two occasions; the pole at his home Grand Prix and third in Turkey. Third place in the BMW M Award is Rossi's Yamaha team-mate Colin Edwards, whilst championship leader Casey Stoner is surprisingly off the pace. The Australian made note of this the press conference for the last round in Shanghai, stating that "pole positions aren't something that bother me, because they don't guarantee you anything in the race. The important thing is what happens on the Sunday."
