The opening session of the Alice Grand Prix de France weekend took place this morning as the 125cc riders took to the track at 9am local time - and Repsol Honda's Bradley Smith was the man setting the early pace at the Le Mans circuit.

The 45-minute session took place under low clouds and slightly moist conditions with a very fine rainfall present at the start of the session. The weather did not, however, appear to prevent the riders from running at close to maximum pace.

Young Englishman Smith will this weekend aim to keep up the momentum in his second Grand Prix season after his storming performance last time out in China. The 16 year-old Oxfordshire rider got his Le Mans visit off to a flying start to top the first free practice timesheets by 0.545s, ahead of Spaniard Sergio Gadea of Bancaja Aspar.

Gadea's Aspar team-mate Gabor Talmacsi, along with French pair Alexis Masbou (FFM Honda GP 125) and Mike di Meglio (Kopron Team Scot) all featured in the top five, each lapping within a second of Smith's best time.

The top ten was completed by Raffaele de Rosa (Multimedia Racing), Lorenzo Zanetti (Team Sicilia), Hector Faubel (Bancaja Aspar), Simone Corsi (Skilled Team Racing) and Chinese Grand Prix winner and current World Championship leader Lukas Pesek of Valsir Seedorf Derbi.
