. Colin Edwards has qualified on pole for the first time in his MotoGP career in his 71st appearance.

· Edwards starts higher up the grid than his team-mate Rossi for the first time since Laguna Seca last year.

· Edwards' pole lap is the fastest ever around the Bugatti circuit and it broke Dani Pedrosa's previous record by 0.374 seconds.

· Casey Stoner is starting from the front row for the first time since the opening race of the year in Qatar.

· Stoner could become the first rider since Giacomo Agostini in 1972 to have a sequence of three or more successive premier-class victories riding a European machine.

· Carlos Checa is starting from the front row for the second time in 2007; the other was at Jerez.

· Checa finished on the podium here in 2001 and 2004 riding a Yamaha.

· Valentino Rossi is missing from the front row for the first time since Laguna Seca last year.

· John Hopkins could become the first Suzuki rider during the four-stroke MotoGP era to score back-to-back podiums.
