Marco Melandri scored his best finish of the year in today's Alice Grand Prix de France, proving himself to be something of a master of the flag-to-flag race. The Italian had to use all his skills to keep upright on the treacherously wet Le Mans track, something that he says was a difficult task even for a rider of his pedigree.

"I've got short legs, so on some laps in the wet it was really difficult to put my knee down," commented the former 250cc World Champion after the race. "That made it difficult to control the front end."

Last year's race winner at Le Mans also paid tribute to this year's victor Chris Vermeulen, with the two also occupying the top places in the first flag-to-flag race in Australia in 2006.

"In the end, I had to say: ‘OK Chris, well done and the victory is yours.' I'd had a couple of scares and I knew that I was at the limit."
