This afternoon's 250cc first qualifying practice at the Gran Premio d'Italia Alice saw a glimmer of hope for the rest of the quarter litre title riders as for once Jorge Lorenzo did not come out on top.

In this instance, that honour went to Master – Mapfre Aspar's Alex de Angelis in another Friday Mugello outing which was affected by rain, although less so than the 125cc and MotoGP sessions which preceded it.

Indeed during this qualifying practice the track surface began to dry out following some heavy rainfall earlier in the day and the times got increasingly faster as the session went on. Early on it was Team Sicilia's Anthony West who was setting the pace, but he ended up second as De Angelis snatched provisional pole on the last of his 19 laps.

West ended up 0.508s slower than De Angelis' whose best lap of 2'07.137s was more than 13 seconds off the circuit best lap set by Lorenzo in qualifying for the 2005 Italian Grand Prix.

Having dominated the morning session Lorenzo himself had to settle for provisional fourth this afternoon, not quite able to hold the same dominance over his opponents on the wet surface which he currently appears to possess in the dry. He lapped 0.850s slower than De Angelis, just behind home rider Andrea Dovizioso of Kopron Team Scot - who took provisional third.
