Fortuna Aprilia's 250cc World Champion Jorge Lorenzo made a statement of intent this morning at Mugello as he lapped 0.803s quicker than his closest rival in the first quarter litre category free practice session.

The Gran Premio d'Italia Alice will see Lorenzo attempt repeat his 2006 win at the Tuscan venue and extend his already considerable lead at the top of the standings, as he defends his title having taken 120 points from a possible 125 so far this season.

The 20 year-old Majorcan rider set a time of 1'53.529s on the last of his 25 laps this morning, with no other rider coming close to the Spaniard's pace. Indeed, Lorenzo came within 0.072s of breaking his own two year-old circuit best lap time which gave him pole for the 2005 race, in which he finished runner-up to Dani Pedrosa.

Second quickest in this session was Lorenzo's arch rival, compatriot and former team-mate Hector Barbera, who lapped in 1'54.332 on his Team Toth Aprilia machinery.

The top five was completed by usual suspects Alex de Angelis (Mastre – Mapfre Aspar), his colleague Alvaro Bautista and Repsol Honda's Julian Simon. Seventh quickest Andrea Dovizioso meanwhile, second in the general classification behind Lorenzo, will hope to up the pace when the first 250cc qualifying practice takes place this afternoon at 3.05pm local time.
