The qualifying practice for the second round of the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup in Italy took place this afternoon at Mugello, with French rider Johann Zarco emerging on top to take pole.

The young riders, who were also part of the proceedings at Jerez in March, completed the action on day one of the Gran Premio d'Italia Alice, with two short back-to-back qualifying sessions after the 250cc qualifying practice at the end of a rainy afternoon in Tuscany.

The youngsters first took to the track shortly after 4pm for a 25 minute outing with France's Zarco - who was third in the first round of the cup in Jerez - taking provisional pole with a time of 2'15.850.

After a 20 minute break they were back out on the circuit for another half hour for a second qualifying session, which saw Zarco come out on top again to confirm pole with a time of 2'11.119 - four seconds faster than the rain affected 125cc pace earlier in the day, albeit on a much dryer track.

Second on the grid will be American Cameron Beaubier and third is Spaniard Luis Salom, while Jerez race winner Lorenzo Savadori lines up fourth in his native Italy.

All the riders use KTM machinery and the event gives them an opportunity to experience Grand Prix racing at close quarters at selected European circuits. They will contest a 14 lap race tomorrow afternoon at 4.15pm and are also scheduled to appear at Donington, Assen, Sachsenring, Brno and Valencia later this season.
