Alvaro Bautista today took his first pole since moving up to the quarter litre class as 125cc World Champion, courtesy of a solid performance in yet another rain affected qualifying session at the Gran Premio d'Italia Alice.

The young Spaniard lapped in 1'57.435s early in the session on his Master – Mapfre Aspar Aprilia machinery on the seventh of 17th laps, to keep him 0.488s ahead of his closest challenger on the timesheet.

Meanwhile, reigning 250 World Champion and current championship leader Jorge Lorenzo will only compete in tomorrow's race at the discretion of Race Direction after recording only the 20th fastest time, well outside the 107% qualification marker. All non-qualifiers will line-up for tomorrow's race with an exception being made due to the bad weather today in Mugello.

Every rider on the front two rows recorded their best time early in the session on a drying track, but the returning rain which arrived a few minutes after the 250 riders had come out onto the circuit hindered the rest of the qualifying practice.

On the seventh of his 15 laps Andrea Dovizioso (Kopron Team Scot) managed his best time to take second on the grid, while Shuhei Aoyama's fifth lap of 15 was enough to earn the Japanese Repsol Honda man a third place start despite being 1.439s slower than Bautista.

The front row was completed by Thomas Luthi of Emmi – Caffe Latte Aprilia, while the second row will comprise Alex de Angelis, Hector Barbera, Aoyama's brother Hiroshi and Mika Kallio.

Whatever the weather tomorrow it should certainly be interesting seeing World Champion Lorenzo trying to hold onto his current 32 point lead in the general classification from 20th place on the grid.
