Faubel stays on pole after second wet 125cc qualifying run

The second qualifying session for the 125cc riders at the Gran Premio d'Italia Alice saw Bancaja Aspar's Hector Faubel hold onto pole as the Mugello rain prevented any of the participants from beating his best time from Friday.

The second qualifying session for the 125cc riders at the Gran Premio d'Italia Alice saw Bancaja Aspar's Hector Faubel hold onto pole as the Mugello rain prevented any of the participants from beating his best time from Friday.

The 23 year-old Spanish rider will therefore start tomorrow's race at the front of the grid for the first time in his career thanks to his Friday time of 2'15.309, while his best effort today was 2'22.771s - which would have left him in 22nd place on the grid.

Frenchman Mike di Meglio was second yesterday and his Friday time of 2'16.053s was not bettered, although he was the fastest rider of QP2 with a time of 2'17.199s.

The next five riders on the timesheets all improved their times from yesterday with third fastest Gabor Talmacsi (Bancaja Aspar) leading the way in that group with a time of 2'18.750, closely followed (0.079s) by Kopron Team Scot's Dino Lombardi who completes the front row of the grid.

On the second row are Tomoyoshi Koyama (Red Bull KTM), Raffaele de Rosa (Multimedia Racing) and Andrea Iannone (WTR No Alcol Team), who all came close to Lombardi's time, but were just over the 2'19.000s mark. Lukas Pesek (Valsir Seedorf Derbi) sits eighth on the grid courtesy of his Friday best.

Eight riders finished with best laps more than 107% outside Faubel's best, including British rider Daniel Webb of De Graaf Grand Prix and Red Bull KTM 125's American youngster Steve Bonsey, but because of the exceptional weather conditions, Race Direction decided to admit all non-qualified riders to tomorrow's race, which commences at 11am local time.
