Simon quickest in 250cc practice as rain returns

After a dry morning at Mugello in which the 125cc and MotoGP riders were unhindered by rain, a torrential downpour at around midday hampered the participants of the 250cc second free practice session on the second day of the Gran Premio d'Italia Alice.

After a dry morning at Mugello in which the 125cc and MotoGP riders were unhindered by rain, a torrential downpour at around midday hampered the participants of the 250cc second free practice session on the second day of the Gran Premio d'Italia Alice.

The session started under grey skies on a dry track but the rain began to fall heavily during the hour long session as had been the case during yesterday's 125 first qualifying practice. Most of the riders recorded their best times early in their run-outs, with Repsol Honda's Julian Simon topping the timesheets (1'55.660s) on the eighth of his 13 laps.

That time was two seconds off the circuit best lap but as the storm got heavier the riders were obviously hesitant to risk too much with qualifying being finalised in the quarter litre category this afternoon. Team Toth Aprilia rider Hector Barbera was second fastest, completing just nine laps and lapping 0.231s behind fellow Spaniard Simon.

World Champion Jorge Lorenzo managed 11 laps on his Aprilia machinery, coming within 0.347s of Simon's time before the rain set in, to make it a trio of Spanish riders in the top three.

The man on provisional pole Alex de Angelis (Master – Mapfre Aspar) was fourth fastest - his best effort coming on the seventh of his 13 laps - whilst Marco Simoncelli was the fastest of the Italian riders at their home track, to complete the top five.
