- Shuhei Aoyama has equalled his best ever qualifying result and is starting from the front row for the first time since Assen last year.

- Thomas Luthi starts from the front row for the second race in succession.

- Luthi is aiming to become the first Swiss rider to score a podium in the class since Jacques Cornu finished third at Brno in 1989.

- Jorge Lorenzo starts from his lowest grid position since moving up from the 125cc class in 2005.
