After what had been a dream start to his title defence so far this season, the Gran Premio d'Italia Alice turned into a nightmare for Jorge Lorenzo as he finished outside the podium places for the first time in 2007.

After what had been a dream start to his title defence so far this season, the Gran Premio d'Italia Alice turned into a nightmare for Jorge Lorenzo as he finished outside the podium places for the first time in 2007.

The Fortuna Aprilia rider still holds a 27 point advantage over second placed Andrea Dovizioso in the general classification as he defends his 250cc crown, but his Mugello visit has been one to forget.

The quarter litre class World Champion, who won in Italy last season, was hampered by the wet weather on Friday and Saturday and started the race in 20th place on the grid.

Lorenzo made a good start to the race itself and was soon making up places at a rapid rate, taking out Red Bull KTM 250 rider Mika Kallio on lap three when he knocked the Finn's exhaust pipe off and ended his race instantly.

The Spaniard had battled his way to the front by lap 13, held the lead for several laps and looked set for a fifth win in six races before he was overtaken, perhaps dangerously, by compatriot and eventual race winner Alvaro Bautista on the final lap and crashed as a result of the incident.

Although Lorenzo remounted to finish the race eighth he was far from happy afterwards, stating: "Today is a bad day for us, because we had a very good race, a hard fought race starting from 20th. We struggled a lot, trying to win on every corner, but we just couldn't. Bautista, for me, was not correct."

After the 250cc race, Fortuna Aprilia Team Manager Dani Amatrian lodged an official protest against Bautista for 'anti-sportive behaviour' over the incident, but Race Direction decided that the protest was 'acceptable but unfounded' and no further appeal was lodged.
