The first mornings action at the Gran Premi Cinzano de Catalunya was completed in customary fashion by the 250cc riders, with two Spanish World Champions at the top of the timesheets.

On this occasion it was 125cc title holder Alvaro Bautista (Master Mapfre Aspar) who edged out compatriot and 250cc champion Jorge Lorenzo (Fortuna Aprilia) by 0.175s, in the first quarter litre free practice session of the weekend.

The duel between the young pair on Spanish soil promises to be one of the intriguing stories of the seventh Grand Prix weekend, following their battle in Italy last week which saw Lorenzo finishing off the podium for the first time in 2007 after crashing when forced wide by Bautista, who won a 250 race for the first time as a result.

Bautistas Catalunya weekend opening time of 146.581s was just 0.361s off Lorenzos circuit best lap set in 2005. It was also 0.369s faster than the best time of this sessions third quickest participant, his team-mate Alex de Angelis who was second at Mugello last Sunday.

This mornings top five was completed by Kopron Team Scots Andrea Dovizioso and Red Bull KTM 250s Mika Kallio with the riders due to return to the track at 3.05pm this afternoon for their first qualifying practice.
