On a glorious sunny morning at the Catalunya circuit Repsol Honda's Dani Pedrosa got one of his biggest weekends of the year off to a good start by leading the way in the first MotoGP practice session by a considerable 0.444s margin.

The Catalan rider, who grew up close to the Montmeló, Barcelona track, aims to delight the home crowd at the seventh Grand Prix of the year on Sunday by taking his first victory of the season and he made a confident start to proceedings in the first session, which started at 10am local time. Pedrosa's time of 1'43.099 on race tyres was only just over a second off Valentino Rossi's 2006 circuit best lap.

Pedrosa knows the venue for the Gran Premi Cinzano de Catalunya as well as any other rider and having lapped nearly half a second quicker than next fastest participant, Casey Stoner, the Spanish former 250cc World Champion will have added to his confidence following his solid show in Italy last week.

That Pedrosa led by such a margin when the next ten riders were separated by a gap of half a second is an encouraging sign for the 21 year-old Honda rider.

Ducati Marlboro's Stoner was sandwiched between two Catalans on the timesheet as he went round just 0.008s quicker than another young local – Honda Gresini's Toni Elias.

Fourth quickest was Rizla Suzuki's John Hopkins, whilst Stoner's team-mate Loris Capirossi was fifth and Fiat Yamaha pair Valentino Rossi and Colin Edwards were sixth and seventh respectively.

The top ten was completed by Marco Melandri (Honda Gresini), local rider Carlos Checa (Honda LCR) and Alex Barros (Pramac d'Antin), whilst Pedrosa's colleague and World Champion Nicky Hayden was 14th.
