The opening session of the Gran Premi Cinzano de Catalunya took place this morning at Montmelo, 20km north of Barcelona, with Polaris Worlds Mattia Pasini topping the timesheets as he has done so often this season in practice.

Having lapped 0.532s quicker than his nearest rival in the early 125cc outing, the Italian rider proved yet again that he clearly has the pace to be winning races this year and if he can avoid the technical problems which have hampered his season so far this weekend he should certainly be in the running for a podium place. Pasinis best time of 150.747s was 0.569s slower than Dani Pedrosas four year old 125cc circuit best lap.

Pasini finished a race for just the second time this season last weekend at his home Grand Prix in Italy where he finished sixth, his best result of the year, and made another statement of intent at the Catalunya circuit this morning to lead the way by a significant margin from second fastest participant Bradley Smith of Repsol Honda 125cc.

For Englishman Smith it is another confidence building start to the weekend again showing good pace as he did in practice at Mugello, while behind him on the timesheets Bancaja Aspar pair Sergio Gadea and Gabor Talmacsi along with Valsir Seedorf Derbis Lukas Pesek completed the top five all within a second of Pasinis best time.

There were crashes for Simone Corsi (Skilled Racing Team) and Dino Lombardi (Kopron Team Scot), with Lombardi ending up in the gravel on the final corner just before the conclusion of the session and having some difficulties walking away after the incident.
