Brave De Puniet raises Kawasaki spirits

Randy de Puniets valiant efforts this weekend have earned him praise from all corners of the MotoGP paddock.

Randy de Puniets valiant efforts this weekend have earned him praise from all corners of the MotoGP paddock.

After securing his best ever premier class result on Sunday afternoon the Frenchmans fifth place finish at Montmelo has vastly enhanced his riding reputation, as he carried Kawasakis hopes on his shoulders following Olivier Jacques free practice accident on Saturday.

Having crashed out of the last two races the talented Kawasaki rider is still troubled by a collar bone injury from Le Mans and has ridden with a painful swollen knee from Mugello, yet he still managed to qualify for his best ever MotoGP start second and then followed up on that success with his career-best race result.

After the Gran Premi Cinzano de Catalunya contest an understandably delighted De Puniet commented: ´I´m really happy with this result as it´s the first time Ive finished in the top five, my previous best being the eighth place finishes I got at Istanbul and Shanghai.´

´Catalunya is a track where I always perform well. I won two races here in the 250cc class and got my very first Grand Prix win here back in 2003. Starting from the front row, I knew I could expect to have a good race but following the leaders was always going to be difficult.

´It was a very tough race because my knee got really painful after the first ten laps, but I hung onto fifth position. It´s a very good result for me as I had to bounce back after two disappointing Grands Prix and it´s also nice to pay back the team´s hard work with a good result.´
