Hayden concludes Catalunya test as fastest rider

Nicky Hayden closed the post-Grand Prix test at Catalunya by heading a somewhat reduced MotoGP field on day two, clocking a 1'42.220 lap of the Spanish track.

Nicky Hayden closed the post-Grand Prix test at Catalunya by heading a somewhat reduced MotoGP field on day two, clocking a 1'42.220 lap of the Spanish track at the end of the session. Over half a second quicker than his fastest lap from yesterday, the reigning World Champion also rode the quickest ‘race tyre' lap of the past five days in Spain with a 1'42.400, albeit a second slower than John Hopkins' unofficial circuit record on qualifiers set in the opening session of the test.

Hayden was the only Michelin representative to stay on for the final day of action, and as such continued to work on developing his tyres. The American rode until the very end of the day, once again putting in a huge amount of laps onboard the Honda RC212V.

Just six riders elected to continue working today, with all those staying on riding significantly less laps than yesterday. Second quickest was Chris Vermeulen on the Suzuki GSV-R800, who undertook 44 laps with a fastest time of 1'42.440 on qualifiers. Bridgestone had brought something extra special to the table for this week's test, with the much-rumoured 16" rear tyre making an appearance. Third quickest rider and current World Championship leader Casey Stoner commented on the new rubber brought in by manufacturer, explaining that: "We were struggling with the 16" inch rear tyres at first but today we changed a little bit in the setting and a little bit in the front tyre and it definitely improved our overall package. I don't know if we'll be using them in Donington or not though, but when we do use them now we've got more of an understanding of what they do."

Factory Ducati rider Loris Capirossi was the only other regular MotoGP rider testing, with the remaining two testers being Suzuki's Nobuatsu Aoki and Bridgestone's Shinichi Itoh. There were no incidents to report at the Catalunya track, which once again experienced sweltering heat.

The next time that the MotoGP riders will be in action is next Friday, when practice begins for the Nickel and Dime British Grand Prix.
