Pitt stops by in Catalunya for Michelin testing

Yesterday's surprise cameos at the Circuit de Catalunya were both played by Australian riders, with Andrew Pitt joining Anthony West in making an appearance as a test rider. Making his debut as Michelin's test rider at the Spanish track, Pitt returned to 800cc action for the first time since his single-race outing for Ilmor GP at Jerez.

Undertaking more than 100 laps after nearly 2 months off a bike, Pitt rode a Yamaha M1 to help reduce the workload placed on regular Michelin men Valentino Rossi and Colin Edwards. With Bridgestone currently holding the advantage in the tyre war, Michelin have drafted in Pitt for some serious graft in order to redress the balance, with factory Yamaha boss Davide Brivio the driving force behind the move.

"Davide called me and said that they needed to take a step up with the tyres; you don't need to be asked twice when somebody offers you a chance like this," explained Pitt. "That was about ten days ago, and here I am testing. My main aim is to work the tyres and give something to Valentino and Colin I suppose, so I ran through around ten tyres and used Valentino's race tyre."

Although he doesn't believe that a race appearance on the Yamaha is lined up, the Australian is optimistic about making a return to testing action after this week's ride.

"I've got a couple of tests planned, to cut down on the workload for the other riders, then we'll see. I'd love to race on the M1, but at the moment I'm working more for Michelin," he concluded.
