250cc class hits full speed

The 250cc category is already renowned for its exciting races and platform status for some of the top riders currently competing in the MotoGP class, but this year some of the quarter litre standouts are reaching previously untouched levels with their lap times.

The 250cc category is already renowned for its exciting races and platform status for some of the top riders currently competing in the MotoGP class, but this year some of the quarter litre standouts are reaching previously untouched levels with their lap times.

At the Gran Premi Cinzano de Catalunya, reigning 250cc World Champion Jorge Lorenzo rode what he described as "the best lap of my life" at the Spanish track to take pole position for the Sunday race. Notable was the fact that not only did Lorenzo smash Dani Pedrosa's previous pole record with his 1'45.098 effort, but he also went round faster than Valentino Rossi's 2001 pole lap on a 500cc Honda.

Lorenzo's time would also have qualified him for the MotoGP race, as the Spaniard clocked a time quicker than premier class wild card Kurtis Roberts.

Fellow 250cc rider Alex de Angelis also made history, putting in a 1'45.925 lap in the race itself to improve on Dani Pedrosa's 2004 circuit record
