Valentino Rossi's latest pole position, taken at Catalunya last Sunday, increased his lead in the 2007 BMW M Award to two seconds over MotoGP World Championship leader Casey Stoner. The Italian's fourth start from the head of the grid –combined with his victory at the MotoGP Official Test at Jerez back in March- puts him firmly in the driving seat of the annual competition.

The fastest three in the combined qualifying times list read the same as that in the championship classification, with Dani Pedrosa a somewhat distant third. Poor qualifying performances at France and Italy have dropped him down the order after his pole position at the Spanish Grand Prix in Jerez.

Another quick qualifier, John Hopkins is however out of the running for the BMW M prize handed out at the end of the season, as a result of his missing the Official Test through injury.
