Jonathan Rea, set to make his MotoGP debut this weekend as a wild card for Team Roberts, will head to Donington Park with confidence at a high after taking his first ever Bennets British Superbike victory at Mondello Park.

The Northern Irish rider was competing on home soil and, after just missing out on a podium in race one, came out swinging in the second race of the day. Behind leader Shane Byrne for the majority of the race, when ‘Shakey' began to lose speed Rea snatched the opportunity and passed his fellow Honda rider. He then broke away for his maiden triumph ahead of Byrne and title contender Gregorio Lavilla. The win adds to his recent run of good form, which includes victory at the Suzuka 300km race.

Another rider to have their first taste of the victory champagne in 2007 was Leon Haslam, who took glory in race one. In a sign of what was to come, Byrne was once again forced to settle for second as he trailed the Airwaves Ducati rider. The first of two third places –both ahead of title rival Ryuichi Kiyonari- mean that Lavilla has closed the gap between himself and the 2006 Champion to just 1 point.

The next round of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship takes place at Knockhill on July 1st.
