Winona riders forced to postpone 250cc return

Winona WCMs planned return to MotoGP action at the Nickel & Dime British Grand Prix has failed to come through, as a result of funding difficulties that have affected the British team since the end of last year.

Winona WCMs planned return to MotoGP action at the Nickel & Dime British Grand Prix has failed to come through, as a result of funding difficulties that have affected the British team since the end of last year.

Set to field Dan Linfoot and Luke Lawrence at Donington Park as the starting point to a belated return to the 250cc class, Winona WCM had planned to run a replica colour scheme of Bob McIntyres famous 1957 British Grand Prix winning bike. However, the fashion brand signed up as a main sponsor in February which cannot be named for legal reasons- did not come through with the promised major payments and left the team unable to compete this weekend.

Winona WCM Comercial Director Andy Hyde was understandably disappointed with the situation.

Winning a motorcycle grand prix is a huge achievement that should rank alongside other great sporting feats like winning Wimbledon or the British Open Golf. But somehow this has been forgotten in the UK.

A two rider team with both Linfoot and Kev Coghlan had been scheduled to start the season, but when another main sponsor left for the World Rally Championship entry became an impossible task. Linfoot has been waiting patiently for the teams return, whilst Coghlan explored other options in the British 125cc Championship and a Turkish wild card appearance for Team Scot at Istanbul Park.

Peter Clifford, Racing Director of Winona WCM, also expressed his disappointment with the situation.

Over the last 15 years we have enjoyed putting a lot of effort behind the Grand Prix careers of young British riders like Neil Hodgson, James Haydon, Chris Burns and James Ellison. We want to continue doing that and see this setback as just another challenge to overcome.
