Wet opening 125cc Donington session sees Talmacsi on top

The current leader in the 125cc World Championship, Bancaja Aspar's Gabor Talmacsi, opened the Nickel & Dime British Grand Prix at the top of the 125cc free practice timesheet after a rain affected opening session.

Water on track hindered the riders as the majority lapped between 20-30 seconds slower than normal pace with numerous crashes taking place.

Home rider Bradley Smith (Repsol Honda) was one of the victims of the conditions as he took a tumble, as did the likes of Mike de Meglio (Kopron Team Scot), Andrea Iannone (WTR No Alcol Team), Randy Krummenacher (Red Bull KTM), Mattia Pasini (Polaris World) and Esteve Rabat (Repsol Honda).

Although a couple of participants managed 20 laps, most were in their pit-boxes for significant periods as the recent showers which affected the Grand Prix weekends at Le Mans and Mugello were recalled.

That Talmacsi recorded the quickest lap on the fifth of just 12 laps with a time of 1'55.205s, close to 20 seconds off record pace, gave an indication of the conditions. Before his crash De Meglio managed to put in the second fastest lap of the outing, while Federico Sandi (Skilled Racing Team), Lukas Pesek (Valsir Seedorf Derbi) and Michael Ranseder (Ajo Motorsport) completed the top five.
