Donington 250cc: De Angelis takes first 2007 pole

Master – Mapfre Aspar's Alex de Angelis took his first pole of the season at Donington Park this afternoon, qualifying 0.410s ahead of World Champion Jorge Lorenzo for Sunday's Nickel & Dime British Grand Prix 250cc race.

Although the San Marino rider has yet to repeat his Grand Prix victory from Valencia last year in the 2007 campaign he has demonstrated an improved level of control and maturity - and tomorrow he will aim to reduce his 38 point to Lorenzo in the general standings.

For his part, Lorenzo will hope he can maintain his winning form and championship lead by taking his first victory from behind pole position this season when the quarter litre class race takes place at 11.15am local time tomorrow.

Behind Lorenzo on the front row are two Spanish 250cc rookies aiming to repeat recent Donington Park successes, Repsol Honda's Julian Simon hoping to win from third as he did in 2005 and De Angelis' Aspar colleague Alvaro Bautista looking to replicate his 125cc triumph of last season.

The second row of the grid meanwhile will comprise Red Bull KTM's Mika Kallio, Kopron Team Scot's Andrea Dovizioso, Metis Gilera's Marco Simoncelli and Team Toth Aprilia's Hector Barbera.
