Records in Stoners sights at Assen

After his superb consecutive victories in the last two rounds of the MotoGP World Championship at Catalunya and Donington, Ducati Marlboros Casey Stoner has a 26 point World Championship lead and could potentially re-write the record books in a number of ways with a win at Assen.

After his superb consecutive victories in the last two rounds of the MotoGP World Championship at Catalunya and Donington, Ducati Marlboros Casey Stoner has a 26 point World Championship lead and could potentially re-write the record books in a number of ways with a win at Assen.

A Stoner victory would see the Australian youngster become the first rider since Giacomo Agostini in 1972 to have a sequence of three or more successive premier-class wins riding a European manufactured machine.

If Stoner can beat Valentino Rossi again and take his sixth win of the season he would also become the first rider, other than Rossi, to score three consecutive victories in the premier-class since Alex Criville in 1999.

From a Ducati perspective, it would be the first time that a European manufacturer has scored three or more consecutive victories in the premier-class since MV-Agusta had a run of seven victories in 1973/74 seasons with riders Phil Read and Giacomo Agostini.

A victory at the Dutch TT would make Stoner the second youngest ever rider to win three successive premier-class GP races, after MotoGP legend Freddie Spencer.

However, with history is his sights Stoner is keeping his feet firmly on the ground, commenting ahead of the ninth race of the season: ´I´m really enjoying the races and I´m going to keep working at it like that because if you look start looking at the championship maybe you´ll get too involved in it. I´m sure there´s going to be some great races at Assen this year, but the new circuit is disappointing because the old layout was unbelievable, really good fun to ride.´

´Anyway, we were quite competitive there last year. I think I came from 14th or 15th at the first corner to fight for the top three and I got fourth, so it was a really good race for us. I think this year we can go there with slightly higher expectations.´
