Seven-time former World Champion Valentino Rossi experienced mixed fortunes on the opening day of action at the A-Style TT Assen, with a solid morning run-out followed by a slightly less successful afternoon excursion.

The Doctor was second fastest in the first free practice session, just 0.046s slower than title rival Casey Stoner, but in the afternoon he fell back slightly, lapping 0.320s behind the Australian, as the fourth quickest participant of the outing.

Rossi has blamed his Michelin supplied tyres at times this year when he has under-performed in races and he spent the day looking at his compound options for the forthcoming 48 hours.

The Italian told motogp.com: It was not so bad because we had quite a good feeling from this morning. We brought some softer tyres, which work quite well in the low temperatures. This morning was better. This afternoon we tried some different things, some were good. We had some problems with the temperature on the harder tyre so it was difficult to keep concentration and not make mistakes. In the end I did quite a good lap but I was expecting a bigger improvement from the morning.
