Last gasp Rossi shoots to top at Assen

Last gasp Rossi shoots to top at Assen

At the A-Style TT Assen on Friday morning in overcast and cool conditions Ducati Marlboro's Casey Stoner was knocked off the top of the timesheets for the first time in the weekend right at the end of the third free practice outing by Fiat Yamaha's Valentino Rossi.

The first MotoGP session on the second day of proceedings at the A-Style TT Assen took place in overcast and cool conditions at the prestigious Dutch circuit, with Ducati Marlboro's Casey Stoner knocked off the top of the timesheets for the first time in the weekend right at the end of the third free practice outing by Fiat Yamaha's Valentino Rossi.

The Italian cut a sizeable 0.611s off his best Friday time on the last of his 28 laps this morning to beat Stoner's best Friday morning effort by just 0.043s - giving him a key psychological boost before the ninth qualifying session of 2007 this afternoon.

Last year's Assen race winner, Repsol Honda's Nicky Hayden, had another good session as the third fastest participant and was just 0.279s off Rossi's pace. The World Champion finally appears to be achieving competitive lap times and has a good chance of securing his best result of the season this weekend – his seventh place finishes at Jerez and Istanbul disappointingly his best so far as he defends his title.

Fourth on the timesheet was last weekend's pole man Colin Edwards, lapping less than half a second slower than team-mate Rossi, while fellow American John Hopkins of Rizla Suzuki was fifth quickest with a lap 0.648s slower than the Italian.

Makoto Tamada (Dunlop Yamaha Tech 3), Alex Barros (Pramac d'Antin), Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda), Randy de Puniet (Kawasaki) and Loris Capirossi (Ducati Marlboro) completed a list of top ten riders who all lapped within a second of Rossi's last gasp pace setting time.
