Honda Gresinis Marco Melandri narrowly missed out on a front row start for the A-Style TT Assen this afternoon when he was edged out in the final seconds of qualifying practice by Kawasakis Randy De Puniet, by a margin of just 0.05s.

Fourth place on the grid is still the best Melandri has achieved so far this season, having struggled for good qualifying results in 2007 his best race finish of second at Le Mans coming from a ninth place start as he took advantage of the rain to get onto the podium.

Melandri was unable to find a good pace in the dry morning practice, but improved his feeling in the wet and ended the day as the fastest Honda rider. In addition to his French success earlier this year Melandri of course took victory in the wet in Australia last year so more rain tomorrow at Assen could be good news for the Italian.

After qualifying he told motogp.com: Weve done a great job with the team to improve the feeling of the bike in the wet and it allowed me to set a good pace. We are in good shape for a wet race but we still have some work to do in the dry so hopefully we get chance to do it in the warm-up. The weather forecast isnt clear but just in case we dont manage to sort the bike out for the dry then given the choice right now Id prefer rain.
