As he has done so often in practice, qualifying and races this season 250cc World Champion Jorge Lorenzo ended the first day of action at the Alice Motorrad Grand Prix Deutschland at the top of the timesheets after taking provisional pole with a 1'24.857 lap of Sachsenring.

The 20 year-old Fortuna Aprilia rider recorded his best time on the 15th of his 25 laps, to put him ahead of closest rival Marco Simoncelli (Metis Gilera) by just 0.071s.

Third quickest was Alex de Angelis (Master Mapfre Aspar) who was just over a tenth of a second slower than Lorenzo, while the morning session's pacesetter Hector Barbera (Team Toth Aprilia) was a quarter of a second behind the World Champion in this session – to leave him fourth on the provisional grid overnight.

The second row, meanwhile, provisionally comprises Mika Kallio (Red Bull KTM), Andrea Dovizioso (Kopron Team Scot), Thomas Luthi (Emmi Caffe Latte) and Hiroshi Aoyama (Red Bull KTM) who will all aim to improve their starting positions for the tenth race of the season when qualifying concludes tomorrow afternoon.
