Honda riders Marco Melandri and Carlos Checa are both using updated RC212V machinery this weekend thanks to the supply of new parts from HRC and it was Melandri who made best use of his 800cc prototypes modifications at Sachsenring on Saturday.

The 24 year old Honda Gresini rider will start Sundays MotoGP contest at the Alice Motorrad Grand Prix Deutschland on the front row after qualifying third and was pleased with his days work at the German circuit.

Melandri commented: The bike is a bit easier to ride, I can open the throttle the way I like when I´m still leaning. The old bike made me pretty nervous on acceleration and I couldn´t do much about it. We still have a long way to go but we´re heading in the right direction.

Meanwhile his Spanish Honda LCR counterpart Checa clearly still has plenty to do to become accustomed to his updated machinery having suffered a light crash in qualifying and ending up 15th on the grid although he is optimistic about his chances.

The 34 year old explained: ´We still have to fine tune the bike and find the best set-up for tomorrow. This new chassis allows more options, it can be confusing at times but we have a chance to improve compared to the past few races.´
