The key race facts ahead of the tenth MotoGP contest of the season at the Alice Motorrad Grand Prix Deutschland:

Saturday saw the closest top 16 qualifying result of all time, with just 0.815 seconds separating Casey Stoner and Alex Hofmann.

All of the top 16 riders on the grid have lapped faster than the existing lap record set in the race last year by Dani Pedrosa.

Stoner starts from pole for the second time in 2007. This is the first premier-class pole for Ducati at Sachsenring and also the first here for Bridgestone tyres.

Stoner, who missed the MotoGP race here last year after crashing in the Sunday morning warm-up session, is aiming to become the first rider this year to win from pole.

Pedrosa is starting from his best grid position since he was on pole at Jerez.

Pedrosa is the only Michelin rider to have qualified in the top five.

Marco Melandri is starting from the front row for the first time since Motegi last year.

Randy de Puniet is aiming to improve on Kawasaks best result here, which was sixth by Shinya Nakano in both 2005 and 2006.

John Hopkins has failed to score points in just one of the last 23 races - a 19th place finish at Jerez earlier this year, when he crashed before re-joining the race.

Valentino Rossi, Loris Capirossi or Melandri could score the 200th premier-class victory for Italy.

Capirossi starts from his best grid position (seventh) since Mugello.

Alex Barros has equalled his best grid position of the season (eighth), achieved at Shanghai.

Sylvain Guintoli starts from his best ever grid position in MotoGP (ninth). This is also the best qualifying result of 2007 for Dunlop.

Shinya Nakano has qualified in the top ten for just the third time in 2007.

Stoner, Rossi and Melandri are the only riders to have scored points in every race so far this year.
