Qualifying fifteenth on the grid after a troubled session, Carlos Checa had a disappointing day at Laguna Seca which was capped off by a war of gestures with Rizla Suzukis John Hopkins.

LCR Honda rider Checa slowed down when he saw yellow flags being shown, although Hopkins aiming to improve his position judged that the Spaniard had blocked him and gesticulated at the veteran. He aimed a kick at Checas bike, and his reaction to the incident did not sit right with the journeyed satellite man.

At the end of the session I was disappointed in the reaction of John Hopkins when I slowed after seeing yellow flags being displayed. John was on fast lap but there were no blue flags and I eased off the throttle to observe the yellow flag. It was unfortunate but perhaps John should control his reactions in these situations and be a little more calm, said Checa later.

Hopkins has been fined $2000 by the FIM for the incident.Everything was going OK until I tried a soft qualifying tyre this afternoon and could not improve. On race tyres I felt quite comfortable in the morning session, we made good progress, and I think if I can maintain lap times of 123s then I can have a good result in the race.
