Marco Melandris brave performance in the second half of Saturdays red-flagged qualifying session at Laguna Seca earned him tenth spot on the starting grid for the Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix and the Italian knows todays race will be hard work.

After crashing at high speed yesterday - as he tried to avoid the slowing Kurtis Roberts in the racing line - the Italian initially looked to be in considerable discomfort, but he amazed the Clinica Mobile doctors when he insisted he wanted to re-join the re-started qualifying run despite his heavy bruises and sprained left ankle.

Melandri and World Championship leader Casey Stoner are the only two riders to have scored points at every Grand Prix this year and Melandri will aim to maintain that run in the Californian sunshine.

The crash was a shame for the 24 year-old Honda Gresini rider as he had demonstrated great pace in free practice, though following todays race he will have the summer break to fully recover before returning to action at Brno.

Melandri commented: ´Im gutted this has happened because I had a good feeling with the bike and a front row start was within our capability. I was fourth fastest when I ran into Kurtis, who was going unusually slow. Despite the pain I wanted to get back on track. It was tough to get through the left-handers and change gear, especially uphill. Tomorrow will be tough. Now I just want to focus on recovering as well as I can with the help of the Clinica Mobile.
