Following his return to Italy after a week's holiday in the United States, Honda Gresini's Marco Melandri had his injured left ankle examined further by Dr Claudio Costa yesterday at Imola - with a broken bone revealed by TAC and MRI scans.

The break was not highlighted by the X-rays he underwent immediately after his nasty high-speed crash, in qualifying for the Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix at Laguna Seca.

The fact that Melandri returned so quickly to his bike to ultimately secure a tenth place start on the grid from which he remarkably rode to third in the race itself, unknowingly with a broken ankle, only serves to enhance his reputation as one of the toughest riders in MotoGP.

The Italian will now undertake an intense rehabilitation program in order to be fit for the next round of the World Championship, at Brno in the Czech Republic, in just over two weeks time.
