Throughout the 2007 summer break Working in MotoGP will take you behind the scenes in the MotoGP paddock, as we meet a wide selection of people who play significant roles off the track in the World Championship and they reveal the specifics of their involvement in Grand Prix racing.

As a journalist for Road Racer X magazine Jonnums job in addition to coordinating other magazine staff members, is to get as much access to the stars of Grand Prix racing as possible, in order to bring the fans the best material achievable.

How would you describe your role?
I finalize the content plan for each issue, manage it as it is carried out, oversee a few different employees and freelancers, and edit and write for both the magazine and the website.

What are the hardest aspects of your job?
Without a doubt, the most challenging - and the most important - aspect of my job is efficient time management.

What are the most exciting and rewarding moments in your job?
The most exciting moment is probably Friday afternoon at MotoGP races, because thats when a large number of interview appointments, press conferences, and other official functions happen. You want them all to go well but not to overlap, so theres a lot of rushing. The most rewarding moment is when a new issue that Im particularly proud of hits my hands.

How does your typical routine for each day of a Grand Prix weekend differ?
Thursdays are awesome because the vibe is relaxed and you can talk to riders without feeling pressed for time. As I mentioned above, Fridays are the most busy - also because thats the day my online column goes up. Saturdays are also pretty busy, but not quite so hectic, and surprisingly, Sundays are relatively casual and enjoyable, just enjoying the race! Im not a news journalist anymore, so my schedule is pretty atypical.

How did you first arrive in the MotoGP paddock?
I had already covered many other forms of motorcycle racing, but in 2003 I came to work at Filter Publications to start Road Racer X - a road race magazine in which MotoGP would play an important role. Ive been coming to about five races each season since then.

How has your job changed in the time you have been involved in MotoGP?
Not much, except that we now do eight issues per year instead of six, so Im busier. Also, my wife and I have temporarily moved from America to France, and one of the benefits has been that Im able to attend many more MotoGP rounds.

What is your advice for anyone wishing to work in a similar role as yourself?
First and foremost, enjoy working with the written word, and then get good at it and quick at it. Also, make sure your people and organization skills are good. Make your stories stand out in some way, and dont be afraid to ask for freelance assignments. Then work really hard.
