Guintoli leads the way on day one in Czech Republic

Frenchman Sylvain Guintoli was the surprise name at the top of the timesheets on day one at the Cardion ab Grand Prix Ceske republiky, recording his best time of 1'58.362s on qualifying tyres on his final lap of the afternoon session.

On race tyres the MotoGP rookie was two seconds off that pace, but the affable Dunlop Yamaha Tech 3 rider will take confidence from occupying such a lofty position overnight.

World Championship leader Casey Stoner was second fastest in the Free Practice 2 outing and will not be overly concerned not to have finished first, having lapped fastest in the morning and just 0.206s slower than Guintoli in the afternoon - on race tyres.

Indeed Stoner was regularly putting in laps in the high 1'58 region, highlighting his potential to dominate Sunday's twelfth race of the season, with only two other riders able to crack the 1'59 mark in FP2 – namely Rizla Suzuki's John Hopkins and Stoner's Ducati colleague Loris Capirossi.

Randy de Puniet (Kawasaki Racing) was fifth fastest, while Fiat Yamaha's Valentino Rossi was the quickest Michelin rider in sixth.

Seventh placed Dani Pedrosa lapped within a second of Guintoli's best and was exactly two tenths ahead of Repsol Honda team-mate and World Champion Nicky Hayden (Repsol Honda) in eighth, with Makoto Tamada (Dunlop Yamaha Tech 3) and Chris Vermeulen (Rizla Suzuki) also featuring in the top ten.

Honda Gresini rider Marco Melandri was absent from the track after having suffered severe neck pains during the morning run-out, in which he ended up 15th on the timesheet. As if the Italian's problems returning from a broken ankle were not enough, he failed to sufficiently respond to treatment on his neck to permit his participation this afternoon, though he hopes to be back on track on Saturday.
