World Champion Jorge Lorenzo (Fortuna Aprilia) got his Cardion ab Grand Prix Ceske republiky weekend off to a good start in the 250cc first free practice session, topping the timesheet by 0.327s with the last of his 24 laps of the historic Brno circuit.

The month long summer break since the last quarter litre class race in Germany has been an eventful period for the young Spaniard - following the announcement of his 2008 move into MotoGP with Yamaha - but Lorenzo insists he wants to focus on retaining his title and he will therefore be pleased to have set the early pace in the Czech Republic.

The 20 year old Majorcan lapped the Brno track, where he took victory last year en route to the 250cc title and in 2004 on 125cc machinery, in 203.283s to put him more than three tenths ahead of second fastest participant Andrea Dovizioso of Kopron Team Scot.

Third fastest was Hector Barbera (Team Toth Aprilia), ahead of Mika Kallio (Red Bull KTM) and Alex De Angelis (Master Mapfre Aspar) in the top five.

Alex Debon, who replaces his friend Lorenzo as a permanent Aprilia rider in the 250 class next season, was sixth on the timesheet, while Repsol Honda pair Julian Simon and Shuhei Aoyama, along with Aoyamas brother Hiroshi (Red Bull KTM) and 125cc World Champion Alvaro Bautista (Master Mapfre Aspar) completed the top ten.
