Melandri enjoys Donington British MX GP visit

Honda Gresini rider Marco Melandri encountered a very different sight altogether when he visited Donington Park on his free weekend.

Honda Gresini rider Marco Melandri encountered a very different sight altogether when he visited Donington Park on his free weekend. The Italian ace was faced with a gaggle of four-strokes of an aerial nature as he attended the British Motocross Grand Prix and penultimate round of the FIM World Championship.

The excellent 1650m off-road track involved many jumps and had been created within the infield, adjacent to the final Goddards Corner, running alongside the Dunlop straight and almost touching the apex of Coppice.

Melandri is a friend of former World Champion Jamie Dobb and a keen off-road racer himself. He was in attendance at Donington to visit another close acquaintance, MX2 World champ and the current fastest motocrosser in the world, Antonio Cairoli.

The Italian future Ducati MotoGP rider who has a house 5km from the UK circuit - spared a few minutes to talk about his motocross passion

You have come to a few MX Grands Prix in recent years (including Montevarchi in 2005), are you a big fan of the sport?
MM: Yes, when I was young four years old - I started to race with my BMX and my first bike was a Malaguti 50 motocross machine and I rode it a lot and had fun. I still use my motocross bike now to train and enjoy it. Watching these guys do the racing is pretty awesome.

What do you ride?
MM: A 250 four-stroke. A mechanic of mine from MotoGP takes care of my bike which is great and he brings it along when I need it.

What about the jumping? It can be pretty dangerous
MM: I love to jump and for the softer and slower ones it is not too difficult. A table-top is OK but a double jump is a bit more risky and scary. Sometimes when I go for a double I imagine my contract being torn up!

Coming to Donington must be strange for you to see how the track has changed
MM: There have been some big changes yes but it is good to see what they have done with the track and how they have fitted it inside the normal circuit. The jumps dont look too bad and Im looking forward to having a ride around the motocross track in the future.
