Andrea Dovizioso is certain to have huge support in his native Italy this weekend at Misano for the Gran Premio Cinzano di San Marino e della Riviera di Rimini and he coped best in continued wet track conditions in the first 250cc free practice session on Friday.

The Kopron Scot rider, who finished second in the quarter litre World Championship last season behind Jorge Lorenzo and currently occupies the same position in the general standings, went round just 0.067s ahead of second fastest rival Dan Linfoot of Team Sicilia.

The riders had to contend with tricky conditions with the rain returning mid-session after the track had shown signs of drying out earlier on.

Behind Dovizioso and Linfoot in the top five were Hiroshi Aoyama (Red Bull KTM), local rider Alex de Angelis and his Master Mapfre Aspar colleague Alvaro Bautista.

The top ten also featured Thomas Lüthi (Emmi Caffe Latte), Jules Cluzel (Angaia Racing), Mika Kallio (Red Bull KTM), World Champion and category leader Lorenzo (Fortuna Aprilia) and Karel Abraham (Cardion ab Motoracing).
