Melandri crashes, but returns after tests

A huge highside in the early stages of the marathon second MotoGP free practice session has left Marco Melandri once again taking a trip to the Clinica Mobile, although the Italian later returned for the final ten minutes of the outing.

A huge highside in the early stages of the marathon second MotoGP free practice session has left Marco Melandri once again taking a trip to the Clinica Mobile, although the Italian returned for the final ten minutes of the outing.

Making his return after suffering a neck injury at Brno, Melandri had a hard collision with the tarmac as he was thrown into the air by his Honda RC212V, having tried to keep the bike upright and on track in contrast to some of the morning lowsiders and runners-off at the same point.

Melandri managed to soften the blow by tucking his neck in and spreading his weight, and took most of the impact on his lower lumbar and pelvic area. He was immediately taken to the Clinica Mobile, where he is undergoing x-rays and an echography to further assess his condition. His neck and head were not affected by the crash.

If the Gresini Honda rider is able to return for the qualifying session, he will likely do so on his second bike. His 800cc machine was thrown into the air after sliding along the track, ending up stationary on top of the tyre wall.
