Rossi's run of disappointments continues on home soil

Valentino Rossi's hopes of regaining the title he lost last year to Nicky Hayden appear to be virtually non-existent following his latest setback in this afternoon's race at the Gran Premio Cinzano di San Marino e della Riviera di Rimini.

Fiat Yamaha's Italian five-time former World Champion has not been on the podium since his remarkable ride to victory from 11th on the grid at Assen back in June and he must now hope for a miracle if he is to catch the rampant Casey Stoner - who appears destined to take the premier-class crown following his latest triumph at Misano today.

Since his Dutch success Rossi has picked up just 22 points in a period which has seen Stoner win three of the last four races - earning 86 points in the process – with the Aussie extending his advantage at the top of the standings to 85 points.

Rossi's nightmare run continued today as an engine problem forced him to retire just four laps in, meaning he failed to finish for the second time this season after similar disappointment at Sachsenring.

While Stoner's success on Ducati machinery will be pleasing to some Italian fans, Rossi was desperate for a good result as Grand Prix racing returned to Misano for the first time in 14 years and The Doctor's fan club had descended on the track en mass from his hometown of Tavullia just a few kilometres away.

Perhaps it is simply a case of ‘better luck next year' for the former king of MotoGP and his legions of dedicated fans.
