Repeating his morning trick of topping the timesheet at the bwin.com Grande Premio de Portugal, in this afternoon's first qualifying practice of the weekend for the 250cc riders, World Champion Jorge Lorenzo took provisional pole by a margin of 0.344s over Kopron Team Scot's Andrea Dovizioso.

The 20 year-old World Champion has just five Grands Prix left with his current Fortuna Aprilia team before moving to MotoGP and today was another small psychological step forward for the Majorcan rider as he attempts to defend his title ahead of his imminent promotion.

Lorenzo set a new circuit best lap time of 1'40.480s on his penultimate lap of the Portuguese circuit which this weekend hosts the thirteenth Grand Prix of the quarter litre class season. When tomorrow's second qualifying session takes place at 3.05pm local time Lorenzo will be looking to confirm his ninth pole of 2007.

Behind the dominant Spaniard and his Italian counterpart Dovizioso on the front row of the provisional grid are Red Bull KTM colleagues Mika Kallio and Hiroshi Aoyama. Meanwhile, the second row comprises Master Mapfre Aspar pair Alvaro Bautista and Alex De Angelis, Thomas Lüthi (Emmi Caffe Latte) and Julian Simon (Repsol Honda) - in fifth to eighth positions respectively.
