As 250cc World Champion Jorge Lorenzo attempts to take the next step in his title defence this weekend at the bwin.com Grande Premio de Portugal, before his move into MotoGP next year, the Spaniard got his Estoril visit off to a satisfactory start as he ended the first free practice outing as the fastest participant.

Under clear blue skies on the Atlantic coast, the 20 year-old Fortuna Aprilia rider recorded a time of 141.445s on the last of 26 laps to put him 0.059s in front of Andrea Dovizioso (Kopron Team Scot) on the timesheet.

A further 0.151s back on Lorenzos time was third placed Hiroshi Aoyama (Red Bull KTM), while in fourth was Hector Barbera (Team Toth) - who lapped just over a quarter of a second off the pace.

Doviziosos team-mate Yuki Takahashi was fifth, just in front of compatriot Shuhei Aoyama (Repsol Honda) meaning that there were three Japanese riders in the top six.

Red Bull KTMs Mika Kallio was seventh and Repsol Hondas Julian Simon was eighth, with current World Championship runner-up Alex de Angelis (Master Mapfre Aspar) ninth and Marco Simoncelli (Metis Gilera) completing the top ten.
