Lorenzo continues Portuguese progress

Having earned provisional pole on the opening day of the bwin.com Grande Premio de Portugal, Jorge Lorenzo was on the pace again at Estoril as he started Saturday's proceedings 0.144s quicker than second fastest participant Andrea Dovizioso.

Having earned provisional pole after lapping quickest in both sessions on the opening day of the bwin.com Grande Premio de Portugal yesterday, World Champion and current category leader Jorge Lorenzo was on the pace again this morning at Estoril as he started the day 0.144s quicker than second fastest participant Andrea Dovizioso.

The MotoGP-bound Spanish Fortuna Aprilia rider went round in a time of 1'40.544s on the 27th of his 30 laps of the Portuguese circuit where he has only one podium to his name from five visits.

After dominating each 250cc outing so far this weekend Lorenzo will look to confirm his ninth pole position start of 2007 this afternoon as he goes in search of his ninth win of the year tomorrow, in the quest to defend his quarter litre class crown.

Trailing Lorenzo by 55 points in third place in the title race after his Misano heartbreak, Kopron Team Scot's Dovizioso aims to bounce straight back and upstage his rival this weekend – and the Italian who won in Portugal last season has not been far off the young Spaniard's pace thus far at Estoril.

Behind the leading pair in the top five on the 250cc timesheet in this free practice session were Alvaro Bautista (Master Mapfre Aspar), the ever-improving Mika Kallio (Red Bull KTM) and the Finn's KTM team-mate Hiroshi Aoyama.

Meanwhile, Repsol Honda's Julian Simon, Yuki Takahashi (Kopron Team Scot), Hector Barbera (Team Toth), Alex De Angelis (Master Mapfre Aspar) and Thomas Luthi (Emmi Caffe Latte) completed the top ten.

The 250cc riders return to the track at 3.05pm local time to complete qualifying for their thirteenth race of the year.
